A Message From the President

Dear TLTA Member:

As I write my February message our beautiful Texas weather has suddenly turned wintry and cold. As they say, if you don't like the weather, just wait a day or two. That adage can also describe the pace at TLTA these days. It seems just when we have a handle on one issue, another seems to appear on the horizon. Fortunately, we have a great group of volunteers and staff on board who can truly "multi-task."

As you may know, Insurance Commissioner Jose Montemayor has officially approved agenda items that were considered during the 2002 Texas Title Insurance Biennial Rule Hearing. For a complete list of the approved agenda items and Commissioner's order, click here.  Please note, Agenda Item 2002-37, regarding the prohibition of rebates and discounts, was approved by the Commissioner. For the full text of this agenda item, click here.

Just as a reminder, the Commissioner has not ruled on the items presented during the Rate portion of the hearing. We are monitoring this situation very closely, and will inform you as soon as information is available.

One of the major events this month is our Past President's Forum, scheduled to take place at TLTA headquarters February 19-20. This will be the first forum for our previous presidents, and is designed to allow current association leadership to learn from our past leadership.  We hope to tap into the collective industry experience and work (past and present) of these notable members. In this time of rapid change, the industry and the association face many challenges and we want to be ahead of the curve in order to best serve our membership.

A total of 654 title industry professionals were in Fort Worth last week to attend the TLTA Regional Seminar February 6-7. We also presented the Abstracting and Examining seminar on February 5 to 190 registrants. Our education committee and staff continue to develop programs and topics that you and your employees will find useful and valuable in your work.  To view the complete 2003-2004 TLTA education calendar, or for additional program information click here.

Upcoming On the Calendar
Land Title School of Texas – March 8-12,  Austin
Management Seminar – April 16, Irving
South Texas Regional Seminar – April 24, South Padre Island

The Individual Membership booth that has been set up at our Regional Seminars has been an excellent way to let your employees know about this program. As of this writing, we now have 482 Individual Members who have joined TLTA. Don't delay! You must join by April 30 to be eligible for one of three great prizes. Click here for more information about the Individual Membership program.

Now is the time to make plans to attend the 2004 TLTA Annual Conference.  Mark your calendar for Smooth Sailing in
Corpus Christi, June 4-6, 2004. You can select from an array of topics in continuing education sessions designed to help you build your business, and enjoy a great line-up of social events for you and your family. Promotional materials are being developed now, so watch your e-mail for more details! Click here for more information.

My thanks to all of you for your support and involvement as we continue our work on behalf of the title industry. As always, we welcome your ideas and comments. And, if there are other issues or concerns that you would like to see addressed, please feel free to contact me or a TLTA staff member.

Sincere regards,
