It's hard to believe it is already February, and the 78th
Legislative Session is well under way. TLTA is working hard on many
fronts, particularly in the regulatory and legislative arenas, where
there have been several recent developments.
As I reported in
January, the Board of Directors approved the P-24
Task Force proposal for a revised rule and accompanying form and
asked that it be submitted to TDI for consideration. We are continuing
to receive comments from members, and we will advise you as we hear more
about when a hearing will be scheduled. To view highlights of the
proposal click here:

Don't miss the opportunity to learn more about the legislative process
and meet with your elected representatives during TLTA's
1st Day at the Capitol
on Feb. 19. Take part in
this new grassroots event to visit your state legislators on issues
affecting the title insurance industry and see government at work. This
special program will give you some hot tips on communicating effectively
with legislators and the latest scoop on what's happening at the
capitol. Senator Jeff Wentworth (R-San Antonio), a veteran law-maker and
long-time supporter of the title insurance industry, will give us an
inside view of the legislative process. Insurance will be a
priority topic during the upcoming legislative session. NOW
is an important time to inform those who represent you and drive public
policy about these issues. Mindy Carr, TLTA Government
Affairs Director, will be on-hand to answer your questions and give an
overview of the agenda for this year's legislative session. Click

The Rates, Rules and Forms Committee recommended positions to the Board
on 55 agenda items filed by admitted parties to the 2002 Biennial Rate
and Rule Hearing. To view the Board’s positions and filed agenda items

TLTA's seminars are
continuing their upward trend in attendance. Policy Training A to
Z was offered in
Houston
on January 10 to a sell-out crowd of
166, and is already sold out for the February 6 session to be held this
week in
Dallas
. The Houston Regional Seminar was
held January 10 and 11 with a total of 431 attendees. TLTA staff is also
developing a Management Seminar to be held April
11 in Austin. Watch your e-mail and our new electronic newsletter, Downdate,
for more details. The Land Title School of Texas will be held
March 3-7 in
Austin
and is expected to sell out quickly. If
you have employees who are new to the title industry, this is the course
for them. Click here

As you can tell, it
is a very busy time of year for TLTA. Our staff, committees and officers
have been working overtime to continue to represent your interests on
these and other issues of concern to you and your business. As always,
if you have comments or suggestions, don't hesitate to contact me or a
TLTA staff member. And if you haven't attended a TLTA event this year,
do so soon.
Sincere regards,
