With almost 200 students, the 2017 School was a huge success! This year's program was led by chair Brenda Nelson and the executive team of Brandi Abercrombie, CESP, CTIP; E.J. Brent, NTP, CESP, CTIP; Christie Deckard, CESP, CTIP; and Teresa Frost, CTIP, as well as the School Committee. Thanks to their hard work, this year's School featured an incredible roster of industry experts sharing their knowledge with the students. With an updated schedule and curriculum addressing the most important parts of Texas title insurance knowledge, the program gave everyone a great education.

Basic Manual Task Force Meets, Continues Phase Two Work
The Basic Manual Task Force met again on Jan. 18 and Feb. 15 to continue their work on phase two of their project. During the meetings, the team worked on rewriting portions of the reorganized Manual, specifically parts of Section 3 on handling escrows and preparing settlement statements. The ultimate goal is to promulgate a Basic Manual that is both logical and user friendly.
TLTA extends our thanks and appreciation to the task force for all they have done, and all they continue to do, on this project.

In the early 1940s, Schlitz beer company was one of the least popular beers in the country. So, they brought in a legendary marketer, Claude Hopkins, to tour the factory and create a new advertising campaign for them.

George Houghton Retiring From Stewart Title Guaranty Company
Stewart Title Guaranty Company | Jan. 13, 2017
George Houghton, agency executive vice president of Stewart Title Guaranty Company, will retire at the beginning of April 2017 after a 35-year association with Stewart, spending 19 of those years as a Stewart employee. Currently, he leads the western states and is the national agency district manager.
Before joining Stewart, George was the president and majority owner of Fort Bend Title Company and its subsidiary, Citizens Title Company. In 1998, George joined Stewart as the senior vice president for Stewart Title of Houston. From there, he quickly moved into regional and then national leadership roles at the organization.

Mark Holley Appointed Texas Regional Sales Manager at Westcor
Westcor Land Title Insurance Company | Feb. 8, 2017
Mark Holley has been appointed as Texas regional sales manager at Westcor. His responsibilities will include continuing to increase Westcor’s footprint in the Texas market.
Mark started his career in the computer network services industry in 1985. In 2001, he was hired by RamQuest as the national director of sales. He was promoted to the role of vice president, business development and then vice president, sales and marketing. Prior to joining Westcor, he was the regional agency development manager for a national underwriter and was responsible for offering services to title agents and coaching sales teams across the 26 states in the central region.

Cheryl Finney Named Division President for Trinity Title, Greater Dallas
Trinity Title of Texas | Feb. 10, 2017
In January, Cheryl Finney was named the division president for Trinity Title of Texas, Greater Dallas area.
Cheryl began her work in the title and settlement services industry as an escrow officer in Lewisville, where she grew up. She came to Trinity Title from Fidelity National Title Insurance Company, where she was a senior vice president, attorney operations manager.
Congratulations to Cheryl on her new role!
Corridor Title Cares to Donate $25,000 Grant to Austin Nonprofit; Seeking Nominations Through March 27
Corridor Title has launched the second annual Corridor Title Cares, a contest in which an Austin-based nonprofit will receive a $25,000 grant. They are accepting nominations through March 27.
"The local real estate community has so many unsung heroes who donate countless hours and resources to nonprofits throughout Central Texas,' said Patrick Rose, president of Corridor Title. "Corridor Title values the opportunity to meaningfully recognize these hard-working individuals who make a difference in the lives of others every day."

The TLTA Nominating Committee will meet soon to select the slate of nominees to be elected to serve on the 2017-2018 TLTA Board of Directors, beginning in June. If you would like to nominate a TLTA member for consideration or to view a more detailed description of an eligible candidate, please fill out the form in the link below. Candidates must be employed by a TLTA member agent or underwriter company. Nominees should have proven leadership and decision-making skills, be effective communicators and have the ability to commit the time required of the position.
Nominations for the 2017-2018 TLTA Board of Directors are due by Friday, March 10. All nominees will be considered by the committee.
