Texas Historical Commission Courthouse Stewardship Program
Since the 1970s, the Texas Historical Commission (THC) has taken an active role in the preservation of county courthouses. In 2005, THC asked TLTA to support the Texas Courthouse Stewardship Initiative, a training and technical program designed to promote the ongoing, regular maintenance of Texas' historic county courthouses.
The stewardship program consists of site visits by THC architects, annual training workshops for county judges and maintenance workers to address issues like inspecting the exterior, identifying mechanical malfunctions, and budgeting for maintenance. This initiative provides training for facilities managers with an emphasis on committing to routine maintenance programs. The land title industry has a long and symbolic relationship with the county courthouses, so it seemed only natural to support this endeavor.
