Election Results: Texas Primary Runoff 2022

TLTA | May 25, 2022
Texas primary runoff elections were held yesterday. While the preliminary results detailed below will not be final for several days, nearly all counties have reported and these results are likely accurate barring unusual developments in military and overseas ballots, contested results, etc.
The statewide races saw Attorney General Paxton and Railroad Commissioner Christian emerge victorious, along with Sen. Dawn Buckingham, who will be the Republican nominee for Land Commissioner on the general election ballot in November.
Three of the four legislative incumbents forced into runoffs retained their party's nomination and are headed to the November general. The lone exception was Rep. Phil Stevenson of Wharton, who appears to have lost to Stan Kitzman.
As always, if you would like to discuss any of the candidates or the impact of this election on our industry, please contact TLTA's Government Affairs Director, Aaron Day.

CFPB Bolsters Enforcement Efforts by States

Consumer Financial Protection Bureau | May 19, 2022
The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) issued an interpretive rule that describes states’ authorities to pursue lawbreaking companies and individuals that violate the provisions of federal consumer financial protection law. Because of the crucial role states play in protecting consumers, the Consumer Financial Protection Act grants their consumer protection enforcers the authority to protect their citizens and otherwise pursue lawbreakers.

“In the years leading up to the financial crisis, federal regulators undermined states seeking to protect families and businesses from abuses in the mortgage market,” said CFPB Director Rohit Chopra. “Our action today demonstrates our commitment to promoting state enforcement, not suffocating it.”
