Houston Title Industry Professional Receives Prestigious Award From Statewide Trade Association

AUSTIN – The Texas Land Title Association (TLTA), one of the state’s oldest trade associations, recently presented Denise Smith Holmes, Vice President of Policy and Compliance for Independence Title, with the esteemed Title Person of the Year Award during TLTA’s Annual Conference and Business Meeting in Lost Pines, Texas.

The Title Person of the Year award is TLTA’s highest honor, recognizing significant and longtime contributions to the title insurance industry and the association.

“Denise’s steadfast commitment to advancing industry priorities is unparalleled,” said Leslie Midgley, Executive Vice President and CEO of TLTA. “As chair of the Basic Manual task force, Denise has been leading the industry’s partnership with TDI to revise the Basic Manual, a crucial guide to the laws and regulations that govern our industry on behalf of all Texas consumers. A stalwart advocate for expanding professionalism industry-wide, Denise has also been a regular instructor at TLTA educational programs over the years and has earned our industry’s deepest respect and gratitude.”

Holmes is responsible for helping assure state regulatory compliance for Independence Title. In addition, she provides transactional support to Independence Title’s escrow branches, especially related to rate rules and procedural rules. She also manages their policy department and provides escrow and policy training. Prior to joining Independence, Holmes worked with a national title agency on software application and escrow training, and she’s served two different underwriters, performing escrow accounting and underwriting audits in Texas and New Mexico.

In addition to chairing the Basic Manual Task Force, Holmes also serves on TLTA’s legislative, federal issues, and regulatory committees. In 2015, Holmes was awarded the James H. Garst President’s award for her outstanding service to the TLTA president during his year in office.
