Why is this important to you personally?

The decisions lawmakers make affect not only your company, but you directly. They affect your day-to-day job as well as your career and your ability to continue to earn a living in this business. 

How does it affect you?

We have a very stable system of title insurance and rate regulation in Texas. That system has served the consumers of Texas and our industry very well for many years. For the last three legislative sessions, however, we’ve had to defend against the threat of deregulation by lawmakers or others who don’t understand the positive aspects of that longstanding, successful system. Dismantling it would be highly detrimental to the consumers we serve and would radically alter the way we do business in Texas. The result would adversely affect your company and your job. 

Additionally, regulations are authorized by an accompanying law. The laws that govern title insurance change frequently and then they become TDI regulations. As you know, those regulations affect your ability to do your job, negatively or positively, on a daily basis. Consider all the rule and form changes – many of those are a result of a change in the law.

By having strong relationships with elected officials through the PAC, TLTA has been able to fend off these serious threats as well as shape proposed laws and regulations to ensure that they allow the industry to carry out its business efficiently, without disruption. 

How does the PAC work?

Personal contributions from title professionals are pooled together and donations are made to every member of the Texas Legislature. Supporting candidates and elected officials financially gives TLTA a chance to get to know them and develop working relationships. They appreciate the industry’s support and that support opens doors. It allows TLTA’s legislative team to educate them about the importance of our industry to the consumers of Texas, to dispel myths about title insurance, and to create a stronger understanding and appreciation of what we do and why.
