Dear ,

The 83rd Texas Legislature kicked off its 140-day Session earlier this month in Austin, where 43 freshmen legislators were sworn into the 150-member House — the most new members in four decades. It will be interesting to see what effect this will have on how business is conducted as these new legislators learn the ropes and get themselves acquainted with the complex and often confusing Texas legislative process — they don't call it making sausage for nothing!

One of the best ways for you to communicate directly with legislators about the issues our industry cares about most is by attending TLTA's Day at the Capitol on Tuesday, Feb. 12. It's crucial that we have broad participation and have TLTA members from every legislative district across the state at this important event. If you've never participated in this event, you are in for a treat, and I invite you to join us in Austin. Register here as soon as possible so we can get your legislative appointment scheduled.

On the regulatory front, TDI has on Feb. 19 to consider TLTA's recommendation for a rate increase. This hearing comes after several informal public meetings with representatives from TLTA, TDI staff and the Office of Public Insurance Counsel (OPIC), and it's part of a new process of reviewing and setting rates as approved during the last Legislative Session. I'm very proud of the work that TLTA's team has done so far on this important issue and look forward to updating you as this process continues.

We're also expecting TDI to issue a sometime this spring that will require updates to the Basic Manual. If you subscribed to TLTA's Basic Manual paper update service in the past, you'll need to sign up for TLTA's new Basic Manual Online annual subscription in order to keep your printed manual current. Once subscribed, you'll receive e-mail notifications when updates occur with instructions on how to download and print the material you need. I encourage you to try out a demo of the Basic Manual Online here, and then subscribe by filling out this form.

Lastly, I'd like to mention TLTA's upcoming Land Title School of Texas, which will take place March 4-6 in Austin. The School's new three-day format will efficiently take attendees through a full-immersion "boot camp." They'll learn the elements of a typical residential closing and the fundamentals needed to be a successful title professional. This new, shortened format means less time out of the office and reduced travel costs. Read more about the program and register here.

I hope to see you there!

Sincerely,

Randy Pittman
TLTA President
