TLTA President's Message

Joe Grealish
TLTA President

Dear ,

The 2013-2014 year at TLTA has just begun, and I am honored to serve as your new president. First, I'd like to thank everyone who has volunteered to help this year. If you haven't signed up yet, we still need you! Take a minute to login to your TLTA profile at the TLTA website, click on the link for the Volunteer Form, indicate your areas of expertise and the ways you'd like to participate, and we'll contact you throughout the year to let you know how you can help.

Even though the new year has just begun, there's already a lot going on. Earlier this month, the Board of Directors came together for our first planning and strategy session. We discussed our work for the year, approved a budget and heard reports from committee chairs. The TLTA staff also provided updates on regulatory matters and the recently concluded Legislative Session, which you can read more about here.

TLTA Federal Lobbyist Jim Hyland also provided the Board with an update on the proposed rule from the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) to integrate the current TIL, GFE and HUD-1 Settlement Statement into a set of combined forms. Indications from the Bureau point to a final rule being released no earlier than October and TLTA has requested that there be at least an 18-month implementation period. Jim also provided some insight into Congress' efforts to overhaul the nation's housing finance structure by seeking a replacement for Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae. He explained how TLTA and ALTA are working hard to make sure any mortgages sold in the exchange for securitization must have title insurance to receive an adequate risk rating. You can read a more detailed update on that process here.

One of my missions this year as president is for every title company in the state to join TLTA. Your association already boasts an outstanding 91% membership rate, but we can further strengthen and unify our industry's voice. Over the next few months, I'll be calling companies who have not yet joined to explain why they need to be part of their industry's association. I would greatly appreciate your help in reaching out to folks you know who aren't already members by explaining the valuable work TLTA does for the industry — from keeping members informed with the latest news and regulations, to our comprehensive education programs and advocacy efforts. Non TLTA members can learn more about TLTA and the benefits of joining here.

There are more than 11,000 folks in the title business in Texas, and I'd also like to encourage each and every one of you to support the industry that provides us with our livelihoods. From the owner/manager to the escrow officer to those in the plant, I'd like to see everyone make a donation to the TLTAPAC. Give at the level you can afford — no donation is too small and every donation counts, so please give today .

Again, I'm honored to serve as your president this year and appreciate the confidence you've placed in me. Please reach out to me anytime during the year. I'd love to know your ideas, concerns or thoughts on how TLTA can best serve you, so let me hear from you!

Sincerely,

Joe Grealish
TLTA President
