2013 TLTA Land Title School of Texas a Great Success

The 2013 Land Title School of Texas took place in Austin last month to a crowd of more than 175 enthusiastic students. This year's new three-day immersion style format took students through the process of a typical residential closing, focusing on everything from receipting the contract to producing the final title policies. Students also participated in interactive quizzes throughout the program to reinforce learning and retention. TLTA would like to thank the speakers, School Committee and Task Force who made this year's program a success. Take a moment to view the photos from this year's program — and make sure to join us for the next Land Title School of Texas!

CFPB Defines Qualified Mortgage, Issues Ability-to-Repay Rule

American Land Title Association
The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) on Jan. 10 adopted new mortgage rules requiring lenders to ensure prospective buyers have the ability to repay their mortgage. The rule, which goes into effect Jan. 10, 2014, also protects borrowers from risky lending practices such as "no doc" and "interest only" features. "When consumers sit down at the closing table, they shouldn’t be set up to fail with mortgages they can’t afford," said CFPB Director Richard Cordray. "Our Ability-to-Repay rule protects borrowers from the kinds of risky lending practices that resulted in so many families losing their homes. This common-sense rule ensures responsible borrowers get responsible loans." Read More »

Previously, Michael served as director of the State Bar of Texas MCLE program. He received his JD and MBA from the University of Texas at Austin. A native of Van Zandt County in East Texas, he and his wife Laura have two college-aged sons, Christopher and Andrew.

Texas Historical Commission Charges Ahead With a New Vision

 Austin American-Statesman | March 17, 2013
Two years ago, the Texas Historical Commission (THC) was looking a bit like the Alamo — besieged by a Legislature looking to save money and under fire from critics, including Gov. Rick Perry, who questioned whether it should continue to exist as the state’s primary agency for all things historic. Now, like Sam Houston after the Battle of San Jacinto, the commission is forging ahead with new vibrancy and vision, with the support of many of its former detractors, including Perry. Read More »
