CFPB Counsel David FriendMore than 350 members of the title industry came together to hear about topics such as what's going on at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), the latest on lender requirements and best practices, trends in agent insurance coverage and social media. The Opening General Session kicked off with an informative speech from CFPB Counsel David Friend, who was a part of the regulatory team that drafted the new rule to combine disclosure forms. He detailed the new rule and final forms, including the requirements for delivery and timing on changes, and concluded by taking several questions from the audience.
The CFPB discussion continued with Leslie Wyatt, Director of Industry Relations for SoftPro and Stephen Breden, a mortgage industry consultant. They discussed how title agent software and lender software will have to work together to allow for shared completion of the new forms, and included an update on what's being done to coordinate the approach. Penny Reed, a strategy consultant and vice president of financial reform at Wells Fargo, also dove deeper into the lender's perspective on the new rules, detailing how lenders and title agents will have to work together closely to share information in order to deliver the new closing disclosure in the required time frame.
TDI Commissioner Julia Rathgeber
At Tuesday's General Session, ALTA President Rob Chapman discussed some of the key federal issues impacting the industry, including tax issues and GSE reform. He also went over ALTA's "Title Insurance and Settlement Company Best Practices" and other ways to improve the closing process. Following Chapman, Michael Brown, an economist with Wells Fargo Securities, gave an overview of the condition of the U.S. economy and current economic events being discussed in the national media.
The General Session key note address came from Texas Department of Insurance (TDI) Commissioner Julia Rathgeber. She provided an update on several structural and process improvements at the Department and discussed her enthusiasm for continuing to develop a cooperative relationship with TLTA, title agents and underwriters. She also emphasized the importance of maintaining a healthy industry while protecting consumers.
Hot topic breakout sessions throughout the afternoon also offered something for everyone, ranging from the latest on data security and social media, to more detailed CFPB updates and information about the latest trends in agent insurance coverage.
The Tuesday and Wednesday TLTAPAC Breakfasts were both informative and inspirational. At Tuesday's First Annual Terry Grantham Memorial PAC Author James BradleyBreakfast, Texas Tribune Editor Evan Smith shared his thoughts and insider information about Texas government and how he thinks the big political races will shape up over the next couple years. At Wednesday's closing PAC Breakfast, New York Times best-selling author James Bradley shared the inspirational story behind his book, Flags of Our Fathers, which tells the story of the soldiers who raised the flag on Iwo Jima.
