Thank you to everyone who attended TLTA's town hall and grassroots meetings across the state this fall! At the 22 meetings, TLTA President J. Christopher Phillips, Executive Vice President and CEO Leslie Midgley, CAE and Director of Government Affairs and Counsel Aaron Day provided industry updates and answered questions from members. In addition, TLTA hosted several in-district meetings between legislators and their title industry constituents to discuss issues of importance, allowing members to share information about our successful Texas title insurance system.

Texas Comes in Eighth on List of Top 10 States for Fraud and Identity Theft; Illinois Couple Loses Life Savings to Wire Fraud
Identity theft and fraud can occur to anyone at any time – and where homeowners choose to live could possibly make a difference. In light of the estimated 145.5 million American consumers who became victims to cyber hackers this year due to the Equifax crisis, WalletHub analyzed data on complaints and average loss amount from identity theft and fraud, along with the policy that surrounds this crime to find out which housing markets across the U.S. are most vulnerable to identity theft and fraud.
Texas is eighth on the list of top 10 states that are worst for identity theft and fraud.

In addition, ABC Chicago reports their I-Team had a warning after a local couple's life savings vanished. The couple lost more than $300,000 during the purchase of their dream home in a scam that could happen to anyone. So far in 2017, thieves have targeted $1 billion in real estate transactions, the FBI said. To do it, they send you a real-looking email telling you where to send closing money, but before you know it your life savings have been wired away.

Human Touch Still Important to Borrowers, Despite Digitization

Though digital mortgage solutions are on the rise, it appears most buyers don’t want the entire transaction handled online. According to Fannie Mae’s recent Mortgage Lender Sentiment Survey, most consumers still want a human touch.
The survey, which examined lenders’ channel strategies as they relate to consumer preferences, factored in responses from more than 200 senior executives across 190 lending institutions. And according to most lenders, “borrowers still want the human touch in the mortgage process,” Fannie Mae reported.

Bonnie Elaine Fultz Armstrong, 77, passed away on Saturday, Nov. 11, 2017. In addition to being a devoted family member and community and civic leader, Bonnie served as Owner/President of Navasota Abstract & Title Co., Inc. and Vice President of Grimes County, Inc. Among her many professional accomplishments was being named Outstanding Title Escrow Person of the Year in 2005 by TLTA.
