Legislators, TDI Commissioner, Industry Experts and Other Luminaries Address More Than 500 Attendees at TLTA's Annual Conference
TLTA's Annual Conference and Business Meeting was held in Austin June 11-13. The 3-day event featured nationally celebrated speakers and industry experts who shared insights and ideas on industry trends, regulatory developments, leadership and the impact of technology on title insurance industry businesses.

This year's conference program was TLTA's most robust collection of innovators and thought leaders to-date. Conference attendees engaged the event's top-tier speakers, asking questions and sharing ideas regarding innovations and efficiencies for their businesses—as well as taking advantage of TLTA's second-to-none networking opportunities, which continue to set the bar for the title insurance industry.
The President's Evening Dinner featured the passing of the gavel from outgoing TLTA president Chris Phillips to our president for 2018-2019, John Martin. Awards presented during the dinner included Title Person of the Year (Roland Love), James H. Garst President's Award (Steve Streiff) and Honorary Members (Larry Molinare, Glena Yates, Ronnie Yates posthumously).

The Growing Problem of Wire Fraud

Here's the headline you never want to see: "Homebuyer loses $100,000 in wire fraud scheme – sues agent, title company and lender."
These types of headlines can be found in many cities, including Denver, Houston, Chicago, Washington, D.C. Computer fraud of all types is growing – fast! The latest FBI reports show that criminals are getting better at stealing money through fake emails and scams:
An increase from 20,000 incidents of wire fraud through Business Email Compromise (which includes all types of email phishing) for 3 billion in 2015 to 40,000 reported incidents for 5.3 billion in 2016.
The FBI told the Washington Post that in 2017, cyber criminals stole or attempted to steal almost $1 billion from real estate purchase transactions.

What Do Consumers Really Want From the Mortgage Process?

Consumers are getting more comfortable with a digital mortgage process but still want someone to hold their hand and explain things to them when buying a home, according to Ellie Mae’s second annual Borrower Insights Survey.
Ellie Mae surveyed 3,006 U.S. adults who are current homeowners and renters above the age of 18. With a focus on driving a true digital mortgage experience, Ellie Mae was interested in learning about borrower expectations and experiences with online components of the mortgage process. Overall findings showed that borrowers across all generations are expecting digital options to be part of their loan process, but would still like the capability and flexibility of speaking to a lender, when needed.

Georgetown Title Receives Texas Treasure Business Award From Texas Historical Commission
Georgetown Title Company received a Texas Treasure Business Award from the Texas Historical Commission (THC) at Preservation Georgetown’s Third Thursday event on May 17, 2018. The City of Georgetown’s Main Street Advisory Board presented the award, which pays tribute to businesses that have provided employment opportunities and support to the state’s economy for 50 years or more.

Title Data Adds Kevin Gugenheim to Its Team
James A. Johnson, Chairman of Title Data, Inc.’s Executive Committee, announced today that Title Data's Board of Directors elected Kevin Gugenheim Executive Vice President effective July 1, 2018 and President and CEO effective November 1, 2018. Gugenheim will be replacing James Sibley, who will be retiring Nov. 1, 2018 after more than 31 years with the company.
Gugenheim is currently Executive Vice President, Corporate Operations and Strategy of Fidelity National Title Group, having joined the company in 2007. Prior to that Gugenheim was President and Chief Operating Officer of Stewart Lender Services.
Riverway Title Selects Executive Vice President, Expands Team
Riverway Title has hired industry veteran R.L. “Burr” Buckalew as its executive vice president and senior commercial escrow officer, the company announced.
Also joining Riverway are Charlotte Sanders, Laura Sciba, and Patsy Hannah, all members of Buckalew’s staff.
Buckalew began his career in the title industry working for Lawyers Title Insurance Corp. in Dallas. In 1976, he moved to Houston and joined Lawyers Title. In 1998, Buckalew was part of a group of investors that purchased Lawyers Title, and he later became owner of the company.
