Where Did New Texans Come From During the Pandemic?

Texas A&M Real Estate Research Center | Oct. 25, 2021
More than one of every ten people moving to Texas in 2020 was from California.

The movement of Californians to Texas is not new. In 19 of the last 20 years, California ranked as the top move-to-Texas state. The only exception was Louisiana in 2005 as the result of Hurricane Katrina. The share of Californians relocating to Texas has increased every year since 2011.

TLTAPAC Team Continues Strengthening Relationships With Lawmakers Who Oversee Our Regulated Industry

Texas Land Title Association | Nov. 30, 2021
While there continue to be rumors that legislators may be called back for a fourth special session to address vaccine mandates, the Texas Legislature completed their redistricting responsibilities during the third special session that ended Oct. 19 and Texas lawmakers are currently in district for the legislative interim.

TLTA's Local Legislative Liaisons (LLLs), industry volunteers who help us maintain effective lines of communication with the lawmakers who oversee our regulated industry, continue to work with our legislative allies in recognition for the good work done this session and in preparation for the legislative work ahead.

Recently, DJ Horn, who is a member of the TLTAPAC Board of Trustees in addition to serving as an LLL, delivered a TLTAPAC check to Rep. Justin Holland. And, Hall Henderson delivered a PAC check to Rep. Trent Ashby. Both of these legislators continue to be good partners in the allied efforts to strengthen and protect our state's robust real estate marketplace, and our industry's support for their good work is an important investment in our future.

Rep. Justin Holland and DJ Horn

Hall Henderson and Rep. Trent Ashby

As reported in TLTA's 2021 Legislative Report, our industry and our role in Texas' real estate marketplace were celebrated and supported by lawmakers during the 87th Regular Session that concluded in May.

Thank you to all our TLTAPAC contributors. Your continued financial support equips us to protect and strengthen our successful title insurance system in Texas. If you haven't made your 2021 contribution, there's still time to make your 2021 PAC contribution – invest in your career now.

On the Retirement of Our Friend and Colleague Lynne Daves

TLTA | Nov. 30, 2021
As some of you may be aware, Lynne Daves, TLTA’s Director of Education, Meetings and Professional Development, will retire at the end of 2021. While we celebrate her opportunity to embark on a wholly deserved and exciting new chapter in her life, Lynne’s absence will be felt deeply following the more than 27 years she has helped grow and strengthen this association and Texas’s title insurance industry as part of TLTA’s professional staff.

During her tenure at TLTA, Lynne has been involved in various areas of TLTA’s operations and programming, making many valuable contributions along the way and working her way up through the ranks. However, her most recent contributions at the helm of TLTA’s educational programming set a new standard and will have a lasting impact on the title industry. Under her leadership, TLTA’s educational programming has become the gold standard for title industry education. With Lynne at the helm, that programming has grown exponentially to include a massive on-demand library of industry education for professionals at all levels, new programs for abstractors and examiners, record participation at our annual conference, the continued growth and success of the Land Title Institute and Land Title School, and timely hot topic programming on TRID and other compliance-related topics, not to mention a successful professional certification program.

Lynne is a master at seeing a need and quickly mobilizing subject matter experts to bring needed programming to the market. And when the pandemic hit, she quickly became an expert on presenting programs virtually, leading the TLTA team in presenting several cutting-edge virtual programs to ensure that TLTA’s members stayed educated and engaged despite in-person meeting restrictions.

Throughout her tenure here at TLTA, Lynne has endeared herself to the TLTA membership with her strong work ethic, passion for presenting outstanding programs, and (most of all) her wonderfully upbeat personality and sense of fun. Anyone who has ever attended a TLTA conference knows that Lynne knows how to throw a good party and enjoys every minute of making sure that everyone has a good time. Our education leaders who have worked most closely with Lynne can attest to her “can do” attitude and ability to get an incredible amount of valuable work accomplished, all while making the experience fun and engaging for everyone around her. Her combined skillset is a recipe for success, and TLTA has been blessed to benefit from that expertise and enthusiasm.

“It has been an absolute joy to work with Lynne over the years and watch her grow and excel in her role at TLTA," said Leslie Midgley, TLTA’s CEO. "Our industry and our association are the lucky beneficiaries of Lynne’s outstanding work, and her contributions will continue to benefit title professionals for years to come. She will be missed beyond measure, but we celebrate her stellar career and are happy for her to enjoy some down time and new adventures in life.”

Then-TLTA President John Bruce honors Lynne Daves with the James H. Garst President's Award During the 2021 Annual Conference and Business Meeting

During this year’s annual conference and business meeting, then-TLTA President John Bruce also awarded Lynne the James H. Garst President's Award for transforming Land Title Institute, TLTA's annual conference and Land Title School into virtual formats during COVID-related quarantines in 2020. Retooling both of those programs to all-virtual formats was a herculean effort among industry volunteers and TLTA staff, and Lynne was the linchpin that held it all together and made it work.

Lynne, on behalf of your Texas title insurance family, thank you for everything. We wish you well in your retirement, and we know you will succeed in all that’s ahead for you.

You can send notes of love, gratitude and friendship to Lynne here.

TLTA Editor’s Note: While Lynne can never be replaced, we are excited to announce that Mandy Begley is taking over Lynne’s role here at TLTA. Mandy brings with her a wealth of experience and you’ll learn more about her in next month’s edition of Downdate.
